Concept Mats & Arrays

CCSS 3.0A.A.2

SAMPLE

Multiplication Concept Mats and Arrays (6 available, Reuse with each lesson!)

DESCRIPTION

Perfect as a lesson introduction and/or to keep in a Multiplication Station!  Students use goldfish, M&M’s, and pennies to build Multiplication facts on corresponding Concept Mats and Arrays.

Day One of Any Lesson: Write the focus facts for the lesson on the board. Distribute Concept Mats and accompanying manipulatives (see above) and have students build the lesson’s focus facts.  Discuss the products.  Do this to reinforce the concept of Multiplication, while providing a background-building activity before showing the instructional video for the lesson.

Extend to Division by using the Concept Mats in reverse!  Write the Multiplication facts algebraically.
More

Example… 3 x ___ = 12.  Think Aloud:

“I know we have 12 total goldfish.  I know we’re using 3 fish bowls.  What I need to know is how many fish will be in each bowl.”

Allow student pairs or groups to work together to discover the missing factor.  Teacher:

“Class, when we know the total and we’re dividing it equally into a certain number of groups, we are doing Division!  This problem 3 x __ = 12 can be written like this…(write the Division fact 12 ÷ 3 = 4).  Let’s try another one…(Continue procedure with other focus facts.)

DESCRIPTION

After showing the Full Video or Quick Flick, distribute an Accuracy Builder.  At this point, do not be concerned about speed (that’s what the Fluency segment is for!)  Rather, the goal is for students to accurately recall products and build confidence while doing so.  Draw students’ attention to the Strategy Cue at the top (#1).  Tell them they’ll put that strategy to use in the Repeated Practice section (#2).  Allow ample time to complete, then GO OVER correct answers, allowing students to make any needed corrections.  Explain that in the Mixed Review section (#3), new facts will be mixed in with those previously mastered.  When finished with Section 3, GO OVER correct answers, allowing students to make any needed corrections. Repeat daily until consistent success is observed.

Logical Links

CCSS 3.OA.A.43.OA.B.63.NBT.A.33.OA.B.53.NBT.A.1

SAMPLE

Multiplication Division Logical Links

DESCRIPTION

Connect all Multiplication facts to their Division counterparts using logical links.  Each Factivation!® lesson includes three Logical Links pages.  The activity targets one fact from the current lesson.  This fact (1-top) is linked to the same fact in an algebraic format, with a missing factor (2-top).  The missing factor is then linked to the quotient in the corresponding Division fact (3-top), connecting Multiplication to Division and demonstrating the reciprocity of the operations.  Furthermore, the Multiplication facts (1-top) are then linked to multiplying larger factors using mental math (2-bottom). The final link is made between mental math (2-bottom) and estimating products (3-bottom).

Begin with a think-aloud when presenting the bottom portion of Logical Links pages…”Class, I know that 2 x 7=14, so I know that 2 times 70 is 140.  I still see 2 x 7 in my problem, which I know is 14, but there’s a zero after the 7 (70), so I must also put a zero after the 14 (140).  We are no longer multiplying by just 7.  We’re now multiplying by 7 tens.  Knowing the basic fact, 2 x 7, helps me to calculate the product using my brain! ”  Repeat this procedure for the remaining mental math problems, as needed.

Multiplication Division Connectors

DESCRIPTION

A new way to look at fact families! Students see clearly the relationship of Multiplication to Division using the Connectors activity.  While the Logical Links pages (above) link a missing factor to the quotient, the Connectors page connects the product to the dividend!  (All Multiplication-Division connections are illustrated in the Division video for each lesson.)  For each robotic-looking “connector”,  students fill in the product for the Multiplication facts and rewrite the same number as the Dividend for each Division fact.  This page reinforces all focus facts for the current lesson, while allowing students to experience the Commutative Property and the reciprocity of Multiplication and Division.

Four Square Problem-Solver

CCSS 3.0A.A.13.OA.A.3

SAMPLE

Multiplication Problem Solving

DESCRIPTION

The 4-Square Problem Solvers activity gradually releases responsibility to the student for analyzing and solving word problems involving Multiplication.  The first problem (top left) demonstrates a  simple four-step method for problem solving.  Students follow the arrows to solve additional problems, each one requiring an extra step on the student’s part. Each word problem presented uses (and thereby reinforces) the current lesson’s focus facts.  Students are taught four simple steps to solving word problems: Read the problem, create a model, write an equation, apply skills to solve.

Increase Rigor and Relevance:  Allow partners or teams to work through this activity together.  When finished students choose one (or more) of the lesson’s focus facts and use it to create a word problem(s).  Have students write problems on notecards and arrange on desks for a game of Multiplication Scoot (students “scoot” from one desk to another, solving the problem and recording answers at each one.)
