ABOUT THIS LESSON

Lesson Four: Nines uses the TRICK STRATEGY. Two tricks are presented: Finger Factor and Nines Product Pattern. (Color-Coding for Flipbooks & Posters = PURPLE)

A practice mat is provided for younger students learning Finger Factor. See"Additonal Resources" below.

These focus facts are the ONLY remaining Nines facts for students to learn. 9X0, 9X1, 9X2, and 9X5 were already addressed in Lessons 1-3. Lesson 4 is the last lesson to have six focus facts. (The lessons that follow have only three.)

Students quickly build automaticity with the Divison facts from this lesson using the four challenges in this highly motivating, fast-paced activity.

Connectors (.pdf)

Students see how closely connected the Multiplication & Division facts are! This power printable enables students to simplify the mental process of dividing by connecting to what they already know.

Logical Links (.pdf)

Students practice linking the Zeroes & Ones Multiplication facts to their Division counterparts as known multiplication facts are linked to equations with missing factors. The concept of the "missing factor" is then connected to the corresponding quotient.

Concept Builders (.pdf)

Students create fact families with the Zeroes & Ones Multiplication and Division facts.

In Lesson 4, the Nines facts are introduced to students using two "tricks"- Finger Factor and Nines Product Pattern.

Some students have trouble coordinating their fingers to do the Finger Factor trick. To help with this, print the Nines Practice Mat for students to use while viewing the Full Video or Quick Flick.

Pause the videos whenever necessary to give students extra time to practice this trick. As always, move onto fluency building once students are comfortable with the strategy.
